On Monday, July 8th, at 10:00 a.m. at the Comer Library, Heritage South Credit Union will sponsor, “Juggle Like an Egyptian,” with Ron Anglin. Juggling has a long history and Anglin always has a fascinating performance of this very old art—one that requires a person to use both sides of the brain along with eye tracking skills that are both important in reading. The physical/mental exercise in juggling has been known to increase brain size. One of the earliest known depictions of juggling is on the wall of a tomb in Egypt dating back 4,000 years! The jugglers of that time were all women! Summer Reading Programs are designed to be a major component of the effort to help children keep their reading skills current so that they don’t lose ground over the summer months and can begin the new school year at the same reading level with which they ended the previous year. Staying on track is so important since the statistics indicate that if kids get behind with reading skills, it may take until as late as November of the first semester for them to catch up and be back on track with learning!” The Summer Reading Program is literacy programming at its best with special programs to entertain children, as well as the reading clubs that offer incentive prizes for books read during the summer months. Kids that participate in the program at Comer Library have a chance at some neat prizes---like a Nook E-reader! But there are also incremental smaller incentives—a scoop of ice-cream or a reading bracelet! Young readers are rewarded with the reading itself— and then with the little surprises along the way.
