On Monday morning my mom’s brother passed away. He lived in a nursing home in Noble, Oklahoma and I hadn’t seen him for many years. As I remember him I recall a conversation I had with him when I was about 17. I can’t tell you all of the conversation, but I have never forgotten a bit of wisdom he shared with me that day. He told me that just because you love someone doesn’t mean you have to like them. To a young girl who thought that love was a progression, the next step after like that seemed a little strange. But through the years I came to understand what it meant. Just like it is okay to be angry with someone you love without it diminishing the love it is okay to not like everything about someone you love. You might not like an attitude or an obnoxious characteristic or even some personality trait or habit or action someone takes, but that doesn’t mean that you don’t love them. As a mom, a wife, a grandmother, a sister, a daughter, a friend I have learned that love is unconditional and supersedes the physical likes and dislikes and even anger and disappointments. Uncle Ernest, thank you for the words of wisdom and rest in peace. Give Grandma and Grandpa a big hug and tell my dad hi from me. And to all my friends and family look beyond the human frailties and things you might not like to love those close to your heart unconditionally, and I promise I will do the same. 1 Corinthians 13:4–8a Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance ... love will last forever! Proverbs 17:17 A friend loves at all times. BAMBAM ♥
