On Monday night, a serious fire occurred at No. 3 Henrietta Street, Dublin. An Taisce has written to the City Council: Owen Keegan Chief Executive Officer Dublin City Council Wood Quay Dublin 8 Re: Fire Damage to Protected Structures at No. 3 & No. 4 Henrietta Street by igniting of tyres in basement area of No.3. Dear Mr Keegan, We request your urgent attention and investigation of a serious fire which occurred at the protected structure at No. 3 Henrietta street yesterday evening. Tyres from an unregulated source were allowed to become stockpiled by children in preparation for a Halloween bonfire. The tyres, mounting up to forty, were ignited around 11pm on the 6th October 2014. Fortunately, the prompt attention of the fire brigade averted a serious situation. However, there is now serious blackening of parts of the facade of No.3 and No. 4 which is going to be extremely difficult to remedy, particularly in the case of No.4 which has one of the finest 18th century brick facades in the city. We request: • Immediate action on the securing of No.3 and No.4 of Henrietta Street which the city council controls; • Investigation of the source of the stock pilled tyres and appropriate legal action against depot which allowed tyres to become a danger; There are enormous dangers associated with the highly toxic dioxens, sulphurs and heavy metals that are connected to tyre fires. Chemicals emitted from burning tyres have been proven to be extremely detrimental to human health. This case exposes the failure of Dublin City Council to regulate car and tyre service operators in the proper storage, securing and recycling of tyres. I look forward to your urgent response. Yours sincerely, Ian Lumley Built Environment & Heritage Officer [email protected]
