On Mortality We, as a species, fear most what we cannot - TopicsExpress

On Mortality We, as a species, fear most what we cannot control. We are also very creative when it comes to rationalizing, or placating these very fears. It is not a stretch of the imagination to understand that even early man became attached to all manner of things and mourned the loss of loved ones, pets, etc. - life has always hung on a thread -whether man was dodging wild animals, or battling life threatening diseases. Somewhere during our evolution, we began to live long enough to develop stories and create coping mechanisms to deal with the exigencies of life - we continue this tradition today with religion, ufology, and various other forms of supernatural explanations - all for the most mundane instance of life - death! Whereas it is understandable that people want to console themselves with a hope of something eternal, I have adopted the notion that the present is all we have and take comfort knowing that I have done everything I can, despite my failures, to live life to its fullest. Hope does spring eternal, but it is much nicer now, for me, that I realize my hope is dependent on me, not a supernatural, imaginary being....!
