On Mothers Day, Im thinking about all the mothers who broke this path before us, who forged their lives on brutal landscapes, lost children on sailing ships travelling to new, supposedly better circumstances and on homesteads with little medical knowledge or assistance. Mothers who worked to the point of crippling pain hauling, digging, carrying, and preserving food so that their families could survive another winter. Mothers who, amongst all that, somehow managed to nurture children and raise up a whole lot of brilliant folks who we are only now really beginning to appreciate (at least in some circles), even as that generation is all but gone. Today I want to thank THEM, those who didnt have Instagram and Facebook to document their daily triumphs and disasters. Those who, if were lucky, kept journals so we can today look back and at least understand a bit about what they went through. The humble, hard working, dedicated and community minded women of our pasts. Today I think of them...
