On November 11th, we will honor veterans of Americas wars. We will honor young Americans who stood up and served our nation. One individual that did not serve in the military but is most certainly a veteran of war is Pedro Zamora. On this November 11 it will be 20 years to the day since his passing. Pedro would have been 42 now. He would have been a dashing young professional advocating for change in our world. His courage to stick his neck out for the world to see him radically changed how young people in America perceived HIV/AIDS. He was only 22 then. What could have become of him. I sometimes think of all those people that died while fighting this horrible disease and what they still had left in them to contribute to our world. Blessedly the science has caught up with this bug. It is becoming a manageable disease. Yet the fight continues to get access for all. On the 11th I will honor all veterans but I will visit Pedros grave here in Miami. I will go there to thank him for his fierceness, for his integrity, for his authenticity. I will ask his spirit to descend on our young people now so that they may pick up the torch and continue the fight. I recently was present at a class at FIU and sat on a panel and in the room was a young man that so reminded me of Pedro. He sparked of energy and commitment. He had that Cuban handsome way about him that Pedro had. As the class continued I thought of Pedro and imagined him sitting in a class like this but empowered with the knowledge this brilliant young man had.
