On October 14, 2013, in the early morning, there were nearly 50 Chinese mandarin ducks (鸳鸯) appeared at the Beilihu Zone, West Lake, quite near to the Broken Bridge. This is the first group of mandarin ducks arriving in Hangzhou. Mandarin duck is an auspicious bird, and considered as the love bird in traditional China. Their images are widely available in many ancient pictures. Mandarin bird likes the open water activity, and the West Lake is their ideal option for wintertime life.
