On October 15, 1812, Albert Gallatin Edwards was born in Kentucky. Growing up in Illinois, where his father became Governor & a US Senator, he was an 1832 graduate of West Point. Edwards was stationed at Jefferson Barracks, where he met, & married Louise Cabanne, a member of a prominent StL family. His brother, Ninian, wed Elizabeth Todd, sister of Mary Todd Lincoln. Albert moved to Kirkwood, Missouri in 1864, becoming one of its first trustees, & the first director of the Kirkwood School Board. At the age of 75, Albert, along with his son, started a brokerage firm, known as A.G. Edwards. This house was built in 1901 by Alberts son, George. Remodeled & expanded several times, many might not recognize it today, but this house grew into what we now know as The Magic House, a childrens museum in Kirkwood. AG Edwards went on to become the 5th largest brokerage firm in the country, & the largest to be headquartered outside of New York. It was bought by Wachovia, which was later purchased by Wells Fargo. The City of Edwardsville, Illinois is named for this family.
