On October 21, 1879, future part-time Florida resident Thomas Edison conducted his first successful test of an incandescent light bulb using a carbon filament. Edison’s was the first incandescent bulb to last long enough and use little enough power to be practical for everyday use. Six years later, the prolific inventor bought property in Fort Myers, and he and his second wife spent many winters at their home there before his death in 1831.
