On Saturday evening, Oct. 12, Historic Washington State Park along with the Dear Old Town Club of Washington, will be hosting a special evening program on the history and impact of race relations in the South from the nineteenth up into the twentieth century. The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the 1874 Courthouse Courtroom with a special presentation from Park Historian, Leita Spears on the impact and history of the Freedman’s Bureau that was established after the Civil War in Hempstead County and southwest Arkansas for the freed slaves. Afterwards, a dramatic reading and history of the twentieth century Pulitzer Prize novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” written by Harper Lee will be done. The reading and history of the novel will be presented by members of the Dear Old Town Club, a literary organization, of Washington, Arkansas. The historical fiction novel was first published in 1960 and takes place in Alabama. It was later made into an Oscar-winning film in 1962 starring Gregory Peck. Tickets for the evening are $5 each.
