On Sept 18, I attended the NAWBO (National Association of Women Business Owners) Ohio candidate forum. Mike DeWine, the incumbent Attorney General, answered the question “how will you support women business owners in Ohio?” by listing dozens of names of women he had hired over the years. No details of the skills of these women, or their achievements. Just their names and the year that he hired them. David Pepper, his opponent, shared a logical case for equal treatment under the law to allow all Ohioans – women, minorities, GLBTs, EVERYONE – to achieve their maximum opportunities in our state. Pepper’s argument is that equality is an economic issue. In a time when finding qualified labor is a challenge to the growth of many businesses in Ohio, excluding or holding back any segment of the population just furthers the challenge, effectively limiting opportunities for all Ohioans as a result. I respectfully ask you to consider this thoughtfully today as you head to the voting booth.
