On September 11, 2001, we watched in horror as tragedy struck our country. Yesterday we were reminded of the loss. Many of us took a moment of silence, and remembered those who passed. But on that day 13 years ago, some people walked away. Today, I think about those still living. I think about the survivors, the families, the friends, and the heroes. September 12, 2001, is the day we started picking up the pieces. The sun rose that day on ordinary people who had become heroes overnight desperately searching the destruction for survivors. The new day found families and friends, robbed of sleep with worry and grief who, hours earlier, had said goodbye and I love you, for the last time. It was a day of recovery for all the people who ran from the smoke and rubble and never looked back. This day was the first of the rest of their lives, and it would never be the same again. Yesterday, we remembered the lost. Today, remember the heroes, remember those who lost loved ones, and remember those who walked away.
