On September 14th, Orthodox Christians celebrate the Feast of the Universal Exaltation (Lifting up) of the Cross. It commemorates the finding of the True Cross in Jerusalem by St Helen in the 4th century. It is commemorated in Orthodox Churches in a special ceremony in which the Cross is raised and lowered towards the 4 points of the compass. You may not know this, but the famous Ground Zero Cross which was discovered in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Centre in 2001 was actually found on the Eve of the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross. Also, the only church destroyed in the attacks was the Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas located at the base of the twin towers.
