“On Sunday, May 4th at approximately 5:45PM, Mercy Flight 4 was returning to their Olean base when the Flight Nurse noticed one of the sliding doors begin to open. She alerted the Flight Medic who attempted to assist her while the pilot started to slow the aircraft. Despite their efforts to resolve the problem the door left track which necessitated an emergency landing in the Town Boston. The pilot executed a normal landing in a baseball field. There we no injuries however the aircraft has sustained damage to the door (which has been recovered ) and what looks like two of the main rotor blades The aircraft has been returned to Mercy Flight’s Buffalo base where aircraft maintenance personnel will further assess the situation and hopefully determine the cause. With regard to reports of an FAA investigation, it should be noted that the incident was reported to the FAA by Mercy Flight’s Director of Flight Operations at the time of occurrence. Another helicopter was assigned to the Olean base.” Margaret A. Ferrentino VP/CFO Mercy Flight WNY
