On Sunday, October 12th at 2 pm the Weinstein JCC will welcome Rauf Mammadov, the U.S. representative of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic. This event is free and open to all. Together we will take a glimpse at how business can squelch extremism and foster openness. On the shores of the Caspian at the foothills of the Caucasus, Azerbaijan is a redominantly Shia Muslim country. In the 19th Century, the world oil industry began in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. Today, Azerbaijan oil and gas are supplying NATO allies and Israel. Come and learn about Israel’s largest energy provider; about a thriving indigenous Jewish community that dates to Talmudic times; about the only Shia Muslim country with direct flights into Ben Gurion Airport, and how every vehicle fuels up. Mr. Mammadov will be joined by Professor Brenda Shaffer (quoted in the attached article from Bloomberg) who is a visiting lecturer at Georgetown University from the University of Haifa. Professor Shaffer is a specialist on energy and foreign policy, energy security policies, Azerbaijan, the Caucasus, Caspian energy and Eastern Mediterranean energy issues. She currently is a Visiting Researcher at Georgetown University’s Center for Eurasian, Russian and East European Studies (CERES) and recently testified before the Senate Subcommittee on Europe on energy security post-Crimea.
