On Sunday night, 60 Minutes will air my story with Ben Plesser about an amazing hospital in Sudan, the Salam Center, which is the only hospital in the whole continent of Africa to offer cardiac surgery, completely free of charge. In the West, we tend to associate heart disease with old age and bad habits- a fatty diet, smoking, drinking. But in Africa, hundreds of thousands of children are dying every year from rheumatic heart disease which is most commonly set off by a simple strep throat. Weve all had strep as a kid- you take antibiotics and never think about it again. But in Africa children are dying, because once you have rheumatic heart disease, the only cure is heart surgery. And Italian heart surgeon, Dr Gino Strada and his charity Emergency runs the only hospital where kids can get that surgery for free. Please spread the word and tune into 60 Minutes- its a great story about an important problem and an inspiring man who is trying to help solve it cbsnews/videos/preview-emergency/
