On The Other Side Of The Gun A pre-documentary of the life of a police officer. Being a cop for ten years I have experienced life and death situations numerous times. As a former black cop I am extremely conflicted over the shooting of Michael Brown for various reasons. As a cop we are asked to protect and serve as long as the life we protect isnt our own. A police officer number one job is to return home alive at the end of every shift. I had many opportunities to use deadly force but I only used it once when a Columbian drug dealer attempted to rob me of three thousand dollars during a cocaine buy/bust. Other times I was more afraid to pull the trigger for the fear of scrutiny by the public, the department and/or my own conscious. Nobody cares about the lives of cops but their families and if the officer was killed (with his own gun) so be it. Thats the nature of the job. Rarely is there ever footage of an actual strong arm robbery captured on video followed by a confrontation with the police as was in the Michael Brown case. Unfortunately, Ferguson PD didnt have any less lethal means of stopping Brown, neither did I between 1984-1993. I literally had to take on gunfire first or met with a direct threat before pulling my trigger and even though covered by the law, I was still afraid to shoot and kill an individual for fear of reprisals. Cops are asked to do an impossible job every single day and night while you lay in your bed sleeping safely. I feel for the family of Mike Brown but I also feel for the family of Off Guy P. Gaddis (who was white), my last rookie who was shot and killed from the backseat of his patrol car. I will never forget him! Being a police officer is indeed the WORST job in the world and most unappreciated and if it wasnt for the delivering of a baby I would have no good memories. Mike Brown isnt a hero. Heroes dont rob stores. All this never would have happened if Brown would have stopped in the street, laid down on the ground and surrendered. Understand this, there are people out there that will challenge, fight and kill cops to gain popularity and street credibility. What is a cop supposed to do? Die for you? I dont think so! Until you have stood on the other side of the gun you have no idea what it takes to protect, serve and survive as a police officer! David Raibon Former HPD Officer Badge#2729
