On This Day: Oct 26 WE look at some of the memorable moments that have happened on this day in the remarkable history of Rangers. Today we remember the first silverware won by Graeme Souness as Rangers manager, a trouncing of Motherwell with Gazza and Laudrup running amok, a win over Clyde at Shawfield and the signing of a Scottish international defender. Fifty one years ago today in 1963 Jim Forrest was the hero as he bagged four goals in a famous Hampden win. Alex Willoughby was the other scorer as the Light Blues ran out 5-0 winners over Morton in the League Cup final. I am delighted for the players and for the fans, but this is just where we begin. The words of Rangers Chief Executive David Holmes in 1986 after the Souness Revolution secured its first silverware of a successful period for the club in the SKOL League Cup. A controversial match at Hampden was won thanks to goals from Ian Durrrant and an 84th minute penalty winner by Davie Cooper after Terry Butcher had been hauled down inside the box. Derek Ferguson, replacing Graeme Souness in the midfield was voted as man of the match, however it was scorers Durrant and Cooper who were awarded the spoils for scoring the first and last goals, with Durrant winning a trip on Concorde and Cooper winning a gold watch. Two of the greatest ever Rangers players were too much for Motherwell in 1996 as they slumped to a 5:0 defeat at the hands of a hatrick from Paul Gascoigne and a double for Brian Laudrup. After a goalless first half, the team burst into life in the second period after Laudrup opened the scoring with a sensational solo goal in the 51st minute. The Great Dane bursting forward from the half way line and lashing the ball past Howie in the Motherwell goal. From then on it was all Rangers, who romped home to victory. Rangers were guests at Shawfield Stadium on this day in 1935. Bill Struths side ran out 4:1 winners over Clyde on the day thanks to braces from John Drysdale and Alex Venters. In 1994, Rangers secured the services of Scotland international defender Alan McLaren from Hearts in a deal reported to be worth around £2 million with Dave McPherson going in the opposite direction. McLaren would play 85 times for the club, scoring 5 goals, but injury would dog his time at Ibrox and he would ultimately retire from football at the age of 28.
