On Thursday, May 15, 2014, David will have the transplant he so desperately needs. Please be in prayer, as this is going to be a big big surgery. When this all began, there was great discussion among the doctors on what to do with the diseased kidneys.Typically, when a person has a kidney transplant, they leave the old kidneys in tact. Eventually, they shrivel up and sometimes are absorbed by the body. This is quite the opposite in Davids case. His kidneys continue to grow and will keep doing so until they are removed. So the question has been....Do we leave them and transplant the new kidney, remove one and leave one (discussed popping the water filled cysts so they would return to normal size, but thats just a temporary fix. The cysts would grow back.) , remove them both, etc. Doctors spoke to us of the risks involved in doing both surgeries at the same time, regarding trauma to the body. Traumatic that the body is losing the organs it has always had and traumatic that the body is getting an organ that it does not recognize, as its own. So the plan was to do the two surgeries. At least thats what we thought. Doctors have discussed David and his condition at length. It was mentioned how doctors in Europe do both surgeries at the same time all the time. So, since they do it in Europe, the plan is to do it with David, here in the good ole U.S. A. One surgery. Out with the old, in with the new, all at the same time. ( I asked if a European doctor could come watch...just in case) Ha. David and I both feel confident that this is the direction we should go. There is no fear (yet), just excitement about being done with this whole ordeal! Teresa, our transplant coordinator, told me today that David will come out a skinny man. How fair is that? I asked if they would suck some of the fattage out of me, while theyre in there. LOL David is carrying 30 lbs. of kidneys and for as long as he has had to endure this disease, he deserves to get the title skinny. Bless his heart, he has not complained one single bit. If you didnt know David and his story, you would not even know that he was a sick man. Polycystic Kidney Disease, over a period of time, progressively takes over the kidneys until complete renal failure has occurred. This is not something that happens over night, but rather over time. David does not know what it feels like to feel good because hes been dealing with PKD for almost 20 years. We were told when he gets the new kidney and it begins to work, that he will feel 10 years younger. WHAT? Skinny and feeling like hes 35 when Im still going to be fluffy and feeling like my age....45? UGH. Im just kidding. He is long overdue. Im just excited that God worked it out the way He did. Drama and all. On our wedding day, 20 years ago, one of the scripture passages our pastor read was Mark 10:8 and the two will become one flesh. So they are no longer two, but one flesh and a guy we had sing at our wedding sang Flesh of My Flesh by Leon Patillo. Who knew that our sweet Lord Jesus was dropping hints so many years ago? On May 15th this verse and song will take on a whole new meaning. David and I will be one flesh, literally.
