On Thursday we hosted a luncheon for Fulbright Specialist Dr. Eduardo Vega and the friends and colleagues he made here in Fiji. The Embassy is supporting the Road to Recovery Mental Health Project, which is being implemented by Dr. Eduardo Vega, in collaboration with the Fiji National University, Fiji Psychiatric Survivors Association and Fiji Alliance for Mental Health. The program is focused on the development of community based psycho-social interventions to strengthen support and continued inclusion and involvement of mental health sufferers in activities that promote their sense of worth and dignity within their respective communities throughout Fiji. The first part of the Project which began on the 17th of July involved training and consultations with clinical professionals, community-based workers, peer support groups, academics and medical students. This segment will concluded on the 8th of August, 2014. Dr. Vega will be returning to complete the second segment of the project in May 2015. In the interim, Dr. Vega will continue to monitor and appraise in collaboration with identified mental health sector stakeholders those strategies and recommendations that were derived during the first segment of the project and which will be implemented over the next eight months. We look forward to his return!
