On Tuesday, May 6, the Eskenazi Health Farmers’ Market will kick off its seventh season providing fresh and local produce, fresh baked goods, plants and other market items to the public. For the first time, the market will be held at the new Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital and Eskenazi Health campus. Each Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. through Sept. 30, The Commonground in front of the Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital, located at 720 Eskenazi Ave., will be transformed into a farmers’ market with several vendors, local farmers, a kettle corn shop and bakers. Duos will again be part of the weekly offerings this year with their new, permanent location directly next to the market. Signs will be displayed to direct market goers to the location. All items sold at the Eskenazi Health Farmers’ Market will be grown or made within 150 miles of the Eskenazi Health campus and within the state of Indiana. The Eskenazi Health Farmers’ Market is part of the innovative Eskenazi Health Wellness program. Eskenazi Health Wellness began in 2005 as a way to encourage employees and others to place wellness and health as a top priority. Since its inception, the program has expanded to include Simple Steps to Wellness, where Eskenazi Health staff members are rewarded with various health-related prizes for their efforts toward wellness; the Eskenazi Health Sky Farm, a way for employees, patients and visitors to get outside, garden and enjoy the outdoors; and Simply Escape, a spa and workout area available for all departments to use to de-stress while at work. “Wellness is such an important initiative here at Eskenazi Health,” said Mary Robbins-Nierste, RN, director of Eskenazi Health Wellness. “We’re committed to promoting a healthy lifestyle for our patients, guests and staff, and the Farmers’ Market is another way we can do that.” While the program’s aim is to attract Eskenazi Health employees and others on the IUPUI campus, all visitors and guests are encouraged to stop by and visit the Eskenazi Health Farmers’ Market. The Eskenazi Health Parking Garage is accessible for patrons and is located just west of the market on Dr. Harvey Middleton Way.
