On Tuesday afternoon, I sent a personal email to Duke University - TopicsExpress

On Tuesday afternoon, I sent a personal email to Duke University President Richard Brodhead regarding concerns I had about the use of force in Monday afternoons arrest of an African-American male suspect on campus. I just spoke, by phone, with Mr. Kevin Cavanaugh, Vice President of Administration, who has direct supervision over the Duke University Police Department. Im grateful for Dr. Brodhead and Mr. Cavanaughs prompt response to my email and their desire to address my concerns. While Mr. Cavanaugh shared additional facts about Mondays incident, we also spoke about the long and storied history of race relations on this campus and how it continues to create a less than communal environment. Im also grateful that Mr. Cavanaugh spoke to the need for consistency in how Duke Police handle all situations to ensure that biases and discrimination are not perpetuated. Years ago, my mama taught me the power of one voice. Never think that youre not important enough to express your concerns and fears. You matter and so does what you have to say. Im thankful for open lines of communication, even in this tense situation and moment, that allowed for truth telling and mutual respect.
