On Tuesday, the Conservative government reiterated it has no plans to launch an inquiry, opting to treat the occasion as a crude promotional platform for its tough-on-crime legislation and $25-million budget commitment to “directly address the issue” of missing and murdered indigenous women through increased policing. “We should not view this as sociological phenomenon,” the prime minister told reporters Thursday. “As the RCMP has said itself in its own study, the vast majority of these cases are addressed and are solved through police investigations, and we’ll leave it in their hands.” Putting aside the issue that, like their American counterparts, many of Canada’s police forces have notoriously strained relationships with indigenous peoples, a failure to so much as acknowledge this as indicative of a wider problem is appalling.
