On Veterans’ Day, I remember a lot of things about my service and one all recruits can remember is their first day of Basic Training. A lot of things happened, shots and uniform issue, etc., but I’ll never forget us in formation outside of our barracks with Staff Sergeant Johnson yelling at us from our front only to hear Sergeant Ligon, yelling from behind and above while throwing some trainee‘s gear out the third story window who had forgotten to lock his locker, per the D.I.’s orders. We all turned to look and I stood there, like probably most of the rest, thinking, “What have I got myself into?”
