On Visit to Vatican this week, Obama Tells Pope Francis, “I’m a Great Admirer,” but doesn’t seem to get the bit about choosing service to the poor over power. If Obama truly is such a “great admirer,” perhaps he could learn from Francis, who not only a “great admirer” of Jesus of Nazareth, but also a follower. Last year at this time, Francis used the foot washing ritual of Holy Thursday to model Jesus – the real Jesus. The fancy name for this is “The Preferential Option for the Poor” – which, actually, is not an “option” but a requirement for genuine followers of the authentic Jesus of Nazareth. Heres what Francis said: “We need to go where there is suffering, bloodshed, blindness that longs for sight, and prisoners in thrall to many evil masters. ... It is not in constant introspection [or rhetoric] that we encounter Jesus.
