On a Sunday morning just prior to the 2012 legislative session in - TopicsExpress

On a Sunday morning just prior to the 2012 legislative session in Georgia, the mostly-white Dunwoody United Methodist Church located in north DeKalb County decided to dispense with regular preaching & singing and instead hold a political event featuring a token Democrat and five Republicans, including State Senator Fran Millar, an active member of that church and a famous-since-yesterday opponent of opening South DeKalb Mall as an early-voting precinct on a Sunday because it is located only 9 miles from New Birth Missionary Baptist Church and he is concerned that this predominantly-black church might use church shuttles to bus black voters to the polling precinct. But Dunwoody United Methodist Church used church shuttles to bus white voters from the parking lot of the Dunwoody Library to the sanctuary of DUMC on that January 2012 Sunday morning for a constituent services meeting which they blatantly held INSIDE the tax-exempt church. I asked Senator Millar why he doesnt just push to ALSO open Perimeter Mall as an additional precinct on that same Sunday, instead of trying to close the precinct at South DeKalb Mall. He replied, Craig, my understanding from CEO May that it couldnt be worked out with other malls. I was never involved in the discussions. DeKalb County CEO Lee May then clarified, We made this same request at all major malls in DeKalb, including Perimeter Mall....South DeKalb Mall was the only one that responded in the affirmative. So then I asked Senator Millar why he couldnt use his considerable influence to get Perimeter Mall to agree to CEO Mays proposal, pointing out that Perimeter Mall is actually CLOSER to white mega-church Johnson Ferry Baptist (7 miles instead of 9) where nationally-known Bryant Wright serves as pastor. No answer. Then I suggested that if he couldnt get Perimeter Mall to agree, he should be able to get Dunwoody United Methodist Church to serve as a Sunday polling place, considering he is an active member there and considering their previously-demonstrated willingness to dispense with preaching & singing in favor of a political event. No answer. If it wasnt already, it is becoming obvious that Senator Millar is not really concerned with also making sure white people on the north end of the county have a Sunday voting opportunity convenient to them. He is just concerned with trying to repress voting opportunities for black voters on the south end of the county.
