Brain MRI why it hurts The radio waves from the MRI cause the body to heat up - similar to a microwave, but to a lesser extent. Usually the heating that occurs is just a warm feeling or a little uncomfortable. As a precaution, an MRI should be stopped when a patient feels heat, especially in their head. The temperature increase in a brain MRI is usually about 2 degrees Fahrenheit per hour, which may be enough to cause pain, but not enough to cause damage unless you were in the machine for about 2.5 hours, or already had an elevated body temperature when the MRI began. Maybe you heated up more than other people for some reason, but you dont need to worry that the MRI caused damage. If your brain temperature had risen to the point where damage occurred, you would have had symptoms people get with heat stroke - nausea, increase in pulse and respiration rate, feeling of disorientation, etc.
