On a sleepy Sunday morning, 73 years ago today, Pearl Harbor was a Pacific Naval Base that most Americans couldnt find on a map. By the end of the day on December 7, 1941 every American would know where Pearl Harbor was. Remember Pear Harbor would become a rallying cry for the Nation. At 7:48 a.m. Japanese dive bombers released their deadly cargo as the surprise attack commenced. 90 minutes later, 2,403 American service members and civilians lay dead. That morning, the Arizona, which was at anchor, was hit with a single bomb that penetrated the forward deck and struck a direct hit on the forward powder magazine. Many sailors were still in their racks asleep when the explosion ripped the ship apart and sunk it before the survivors could escape. 1,177 Arizona crewmen were killed and most of them still rest in the sunken hull. Ive visited the Arizona Memorial. Its a holy place and every few moments a drop of oil rises from the underwater tomb and blooms on the surface reminding the visitor of the high price of freedom. God Bless all of you who have or are serving our country to defend that Freedom!
