On a street in Sarajevo, Bosnia (then a province of the Austro Hungarian Empire) 100 years ago today, a Bosnian Serb assasinated the heir to the throne of the empire and his wife in an act of vengance for that country taking over his several years before and as a terrorist act in the name of creating a new Slavic country in the Balkans which we knew as Yugoslavia. As any student of history knows, international tensions quickly escalated from a blame game between Austria-Hungary and Serbia into WW I aka The World War, claiming 14 million lives, including 65,000 Americans in what was a massive slaughter unlike anything the world has ever seen. Watch the movie War Horse and you will see what I mean. How ironic that this same city where two shots were fired in the name of Yugoslavia would later become the focus of a civil war as that country fragmented in the 90s.
