On august 5 , 1900 iKing Aleksandar I Obrenović of Serbia married, Draginja Draga Milićević Lunjevica, who was a widow and former a lady-in-waiting to his mother, Queen Natalija, and 12 years older than him Their union draw such unpopularity even just upon the announcement of their engagement. The Queen Mother, Queen Natalija even openly opposed the engagement, so much in fact that King Aleksandar I sent her into exile. Even the Kings cabinet and his subjects opposed the marriage, until Emperor Nikolay II congratulated the couple on their engagement and presented that he accepted to be the marriages principal witness. In order to gain popularity, King Aleksandar introduced a liberal constitution only to find that parliament caused more nuissances to him, and he suspended the constitution in order to reestablish grip over the politicians, which brought him more unpopularity.
