On behalf of the SDFPTF, heres the latest from Kristen Smith: Greetings Fall Prevention Task Force, Both of our chapters have met and we are off to a running start for 2014! Each chapter has one nominee for the election to serve as Co-Chair along with me: Mercedes Margritz for the Main Chapter, and Kim Bell for the North County chapter. Thank you to both of these veteran Chairs for volunteering to serve for 2014! We are still accepting nominations, so if you want to nominate yourself, please contact me via email before the next meeting. We will vote at the meetings. Each chapter will host a Fall Prevention Speakers’ Bureau training in February. Here is how it will work: The next meeting of each chapter (Feb 11th for the Main Chapter, and Feb 18th for the North County chapter) will include a presentation, “Fall Prevention for Seniors” that will be an overview of the topic, and serve as an example of a seminar that could be given to seniors. These chapter meetings constitute “Part 1” of the training, and will also be a good overview for anyone wanting to learn the basics of the wide field of fall prevention. Part 2 of the training for the Main Chapter will be on Thursday, Feb 13th from 11:30 – 1:30 at the Burn Institute (same place as the regular meetings) – bring your own lunch. Part 2 of the training for the North County Chapter will be on Thursday, Feb 27th at a place yet to be determined. In fact, if you have a place where we could hold the training, let me know (should hold 20 people, first choice for time is 1:00 – 3:00; 2nd choice of time is 10:00 – 12:00) Part 2 of the training will focus on how to use various teaching methods and participants will have a chance to practice their presentation skills. You must attend Part 1 and Part 2 if you are new to the Speakers’ Bureau (you could mix Main and North County if you want, as long as you attend a part 1 and a Part 2). To be a speaker, you must attend the training and agree to abide by the Speakers’ guidelines – see attached. I get requests for speakers to present at various senior communities and then I send out the requests to the members. Once we have a bigger pool of speakers, we will publicize the Bureau so we will get more requests. Here are the specs for the upcoming meetings: Main Chapter: 12:45 – 2:00, -- first 15 minutes is orientation for new members, regular business starts at 1:00 Tuesday, Feb 11th Burn Institute 8825 Aero Drive San Diego, CA 92123 – on the South side of Aero Drive – a little east of Sandrock. Park in the back of the building and once you get out of the car and face the building, the door to our conference room is on the far left. North County: Tuesday, Feb 18th, from 1:00 – 2:30 at the Tri-City Wellness Center in Carlsbad: 6250 El Camino Real Carlsbad, CA 92009 Our conference room is just off the main foyer on the first floor.
