On behalf of the students, faculty and staff of the University of South Florida System, I extend our deepest concern and support for the injured Florida State University students and the entire FSU community in the wake of this morning’s incident. We join millions of Floridians in sending our best wishes for the students still hospitalized to make a full and speedy recovery. At USF and across the State University System of Florida, safety is the top priority. We commend FSU and first responders in Tallahassee for their quick and appropriate handling of this very traumatic situation. It is clear that the planning, training and diligence of these proactive agencies minimized the damage done by an individual acting alone. We want to assure the USF System students, faculty, staff and campus visitors that we also work diligently every day and coordinate with local first responder agencies to create safe campus environments in Tampa, St. Petersburg and Sarasota-Manatee. Times like these remind us to be vigilant of our own personal safety. If any member of the USF community has any concern, we encourage them to visit the Your Safety page of the University Police website. Additionally, the USF Counseling Centers on each of our campuses have professionals who are ready to help any students who may need someone to talk to about their safety concerns, stress or other wellness issues. The coming days and weeks will be difficult ones for our friends and colleagues at Florida State University.
