On journaling: Sometimes I find myself wanting to write about - TopicsExpress

On journaling: Sometimes I find myself wanting to write about very personal things that transpire in my life. A deep God encounter, a meaningful conversation, an observation embedded in the fabric of my life. Theres such a tendency to over share online, to bare your soul. I write about these things in my journal instead. I preserve the integrity of the revelation for a later date. I dont really want my lyrics to sound like my diary is screaming out loud. Recently, I asked permission of some family to share something very tender to our family narrative. I am convinced it could be a powerful piece if I had the courage to write it, but the desire to honor my family is also very strong. I am in awe of those who share brave stories. I admire Rick Warren very much, who described his sons suicide in a series of sermons on grief this past year. In the wake of the event, Rick mentioned that his family always supported the mental health community in a distant way, but he was convicted that he wanted to honor his sons dignity by refraining from using his story as a platform from which to preach. His sons death afforded the liberty Rick sought to use his sons struggle as a platform from which to advocate for the needs of those struggling with mental health. I love his respect for and sensitivity to his sons very private and personal struggle. Its a fine balance and the tension of anyone who writes - we often carry deep and profound words and narratives within us until they are appropriate to release to the worlds stage. Our greatest hope is that one day we will be able to share them; our greatest fear is that what we have labored over for years will not be received well; our greatest desire is that our own personal experience will be used for good and will rage against the dying of the light.
