On location filming in Toronto exceeds $1 billion for third straight year A presentation to the City of Torontos Economic Development Committee today outlined the ongoing success of Torontos screen-based industry – film, television, commercials and animation. In 2013: - Screen-based production companies invested $1.19 billion in on-location filming in Toronto, exceeding the $1 billion mark for the third consecutive year. - The 2013 investments were almost identical to the $1.2 billion level reached in 2012. - Investment in major domestic productions reached $515 million, exceeding the $500 million level for the first time. - Animation spending exceeded $100 million for the first time, increasing by $15 million. - Television series productions dominate investment in Toronto with almost two-thirds (62 per cent or $730 million) of total production investment being for television series. - Production investment also increased significantly for commercials (more than $32 million) and music videos (more than 4.6 million). I congratulate the 25,000 people currently working in this key sector for their contributions to our citys success, said Mayor Rob Ford. It is great to see that this success is extending beyond television and film into animation, commercial and music video productions. The ongoing success of Torontos screen based industry is impressive and I am pleased to tell you what investors tell us – that it is the quality of talent, in front of and behind the camera, as well as the studio facilities, that are the driving forces of Toronto’s success, said Councillor Michael Thompson (Ward 37 Scarborough Centre), Chair of the Economic Development Committee. The success of our domestic industry, exceeding half a billion dollars in investment and exceeding the level of international investment, testifies to the talent we have in our city. The Committee recommended that City Council, through the Toronto Film Board, congratulate the citys screen-based industries for the breadth and depth of their talent, in front of and behind the camera, and for their collaborative efforts to promote Toronto and attract investment. The Committee is also asking Council to instruct the City Clerk to write the Ontario Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport and the federal Minister of Canadian Heritage to acknowledge and thank them for their ongoing support of this important sector.
