On may 23rd 2002 Shawn Green set the MLB record for total bases in one game against the Milwaukee Brewers by going 6 for 6 with 4 home runs, 1 double, and 1 single. Obviously he set the Los Angeles Dodgers record as well. Guess who held the Los Angeles Dodgers record for total bases in one game before Shawn broke it? Davey Lopes - On August 20th, 1974 Lopes hit 3 home runs, 1 double, and 1 single off the Chicago Cubs. (15 total Bases). He also held the major league record for most stolen bases in one game (5). That record has since been broken too. He also held the record for most consecutive successful stolen bases without being caught (38). That record has also since been broken. His success percentage for stolen bases in his career was an amazing 83% ranking him 3rd all time among players with at least 400 stolen bases. I had the privilege of seeing him play many times at Dodger Stadium when I was a kid and almost every time he would reach first base everyone in the stadium knew, including the opposing pitcher and catcher, he was going to steal second and sometimes steal third as well. Unfortunately for the opposing pitcher and catcher there was absolutely nothing they could do about it. I even recall Lopes getting to first and while the pitcher was in the stretch, the entire stadium chanting “Go, Go, Go, Go”. Something I had never seen before or since. He once hit 28 home runs in a season. Something even Hall Of Famer Joe Morgan never achieved. I think Lopes was probably one of the most underrated players in Dodger history. But I might be a bit biased because he was my favorite player and the reason I played second base in little league. Check out their uniform numbers. I had never noticed that before.
