On my birthday, its time for my annual expression of gratitude. So, here goes: 1. For the great gift of a human life in which to learn to practice love, compassion, and Wisdom. 2. For my California family, Carolina, Ramon Jr. And Karla, who bring joy, love, and fulfillment to my life. 3. For my friends who know me and yet care about me. 4. For the Kriya Yoga lineage of spiritual masters, who taught me the art of spiritual practice, and who led me to the door of self-realization. For Jesus, the malkutah mystic and embodiment of compassion; for Mahavatar Babaji, the Himalayan yogi who sent Kriya yoga to the West; for Swami Sri Yukteswar Giri, the fierce intellectual; for Paramhansa Yogananda, who lit the flame of Kriya in my heart when I was sixteen years old; for my spiritual teacher, Goswami Kriyananda, whose boundless Wisdom teaches me every day. 5. For Haidiakhan Baba, who named me Karunamata, and, in doing so, revealed to me my path in this life. 6. For Shakymuni Buddha, whose teachings focus me on the possibility of enlightenment in everyday life, and who relentlessly refused to name the Real. 7. For Sogyal Rinpoche, who taught me the practice of compassion. 6. For Anandamoyi Ma, whose grace-filled Presence is my refuge in the storm. 7. For His Holiness Swami Swarupananda Giri, who immersed me in nirvikalpa samadhi with a gesture and a single sentence. 8. For Abhinavagupta, Swami Lakshman Joo, and Pandit Mark Dyczkowski, for opening me to the breathtaking vistas of Kashmir Shaivism, and for dissolving all my questions into nothingness. I am very grateful that by the grace of love in my life and the freely given Wisdom of my teachers, I have been able to soften my karma and to live a life that I love, in spite of (or perhaps because of) the challenges that this life has offered me.
