On my educational DVD of Alston in Overdrive commissioned by The Place in 2007, I was interested to explore the very different way that dancers and musicians count time (in my experience). As a former pro musician who had both performed with dancers and accompanied dance classes, I was acutely aware of this. The DVD is primarily about the dance, but I was lucky enough to have an opportunity of shooting an interview with composer Terry Riley in NY and with the interpreting composer Steffen Schleiermacher in Leipzig to throw light on the structure of the interpretation of Keyboard Study number 1 Richard Alston chose for his piece for eleven dancers - Overdrive. Given that minimalist music of this kind presents a more or less featureless landscape it fascinated me how the dancers knew when to enter/exit, let alone what to do when ...
