On my mind? A new crusade - I have not had a campaign against stupidity in a while. I found out this weekend, after a couple months of asking around, that the Oak Park school district BANS (!) bicycle riding to school and refuses to install bike racks. Kids who ride bikes to school can be subject to school discipline (seriously). Let that sink in - the school district thinks they can tell parents how they can transport their kids to school. Oak Park. The liberal, healthy lifestyle Mecca in the Chicago burbs. The community whose entire new traffic plan is supposed to be centered around making the town "bike friendly" - refuses to install racks at schools and threatens children with discipline if they ride their bikes to school. (No- liability is not a problem, it is a concern invented by bureaucrats attempting junior lawyering (badly)). The bus routes pick kids up who live more than a-half-mile from school. ONE-HALF-MILE. A 3 minute bike ride. My neighbors drive their kids to the school and I can SEE THE SCHOOL from my house (!!!) We are trying to instill good healthy choice decision making in our children and we face this. The district policy head emailed me using the phrase - "it is what it is." Who actually says that? let alone writes it in an email?!? So,... one pissed off, cycling lawyer here with resources and a big bone to pick. This will keep me occupied for a while. Any of my OP friends who find this equally troubling, let me know.
