On my trip to Ireland last month, on the cab ride from the Cork - TopicsExpress

On my trip to Ireland last month, on the cab ride from the Cork train station to my b&b, the driver asked me about my trip and I told him about looking for pubs with traditional singing and tried to describe what I meant by that. He (an older gentleman) said that you can still find this but much more so in the smaller towns. He said that unfortunately you couldnt plan this, but the place you find what he understood me to be looking for was at funerals in these towns. He said thats when the community gathers and pulls out their songs of childhood and memory, thats where this singing still happens (removed from commercial considerations, although thats my take not his). I think that was an amazing observation. Im wondering how true it is, but it certainly makes sense. Its a great story, in any case, and now this imagined funeral singing is part of the Ireland myth I hold in my mind.
