On our Honeymoon, broke as we were, Joel and I went to visit my friend, Jeannette Tetz, and her family with the intention of picking up an 1971 Westfalia Van (VW) and drive it back to Washington. On our way home, we were almost to Anderson, CA, when the car next to us started honking and pointing. it seems the passenger side wheel well was on FIRE! We pulled over and threw sand & what little water on it that we had. The car had pulled over also. It was a lovely older couple that lived in the area. They followed us into town to the nearest garage, drove us to an inexpensive hotel (thanks, Jeannette for funding that), bought us some dinner and just as we were saying our goodbyes they handed us a $10 "in case you need it.". We thanked them for their kindness and asked for their address to return the money when we get home. They would hear none of it. They said to just help a stranger in need when we can. I tell this story often, because it is the basis of my faith in mankind.
