On our recent cruise to Southeast Alaska we were privileged to witness the rarely seen bubble net feeding behavior of humpback whales north of Juneau. The whales gather in a group (11 in this case) and circle a school of fish while exhaling, creating a rising ring of bubbles which traps the fish. Then one whale swims under the ring and emits a blast of sound which stuns the fish. The whole group then lunges into the circle and gorges on the fish. The gulls circle overhead to grab the scraps when the whales leave. We saw this happen four times near our boat. Check it out.
