On soft laws which are never implemented. They only serve to ensure a constant stream of bribes to our bureaucracy from those already at the bottom of the pyramid. So this is what my economist friend told me. The roadside cutting chai that we so love is in all probability illegal. If it was produced legally - all licenses obtained from various government departments and all rules followed - the tea would be at least Rs. 25/-, not Rs. 5/-. Which means very few in India would be able to afford that magical fluid which keeps the nation running. Got me thinking. Not all things illegal are necessarily bad. That bribe to the policeman and local goonda, a few pots and pans placed usually over on open drain (in Mumbai at least), near-slave labor, and entrepreneurship at the bottom of the pyramid results in that unending supply of lovely milky, sweet, masala chai. - Devdutt Pattanaik
