On the 11th of September 1714, the region of Catalonia got incorporated in the kingdom of Spain. Despite many sincere attempts to "Spanify" the Catalans, who have their own language and culture, especially during the years of the Franco dictatorship, this never worked and after "el Caudillo" died Catalan culture revived with a vengeance. The last few years, calls for independence or at least a referendum have gotten stronger, after the current Spanish government seems bent on eroding civil rights, education, health care and employment while eagerly filling their own pockets. The royal family, after siphoning off millions in public funds and a disastrous elephant hunt, seems equally rotten and spoiled. Today, from one end of Catalonia to the other, people are holding hands in a giant human chain, the Via Catalana, calling for the right to decide about the fate of their own region. Though I am not necessarily in favor of Catalan independence, I fully support a referendum and give the Catalans the right to decide for themselves.
