On the 2nd November there were rumours in a Spanish online news source that David Cameron had said. He would not honour the result of a referendum. The text was in Spanish I did a Google translate. It was garbled but it did mention Cameron. I did not believe the report, but I emailed the Tory Chairman. I have just received a reply. Dear Mr ******** I am writing on behalf of the Party Chairman, The Rt Hon Grant Shapps MP, who has asked me to thank you for your recent email. It is good of you to let us know your thoughts, and I will be sure to pass your comments on to the Chairmen and the Conservative Research Department. Unfortunately the link that you have provided does not contain an English version of the article you refer to. Still, I would question the veracity of the original article not least because David Cameron is committed to giving the British people an IN/OUT referendum on our membership of the EU. Time and time again, the Prime Minister has stood up for Britain in Europe. There had been questions over whether he would veto an EU treaty – he did. They questioned his ability to cut the EU Budget – he did. They questioned his ability to get powers back from the EU – he got us out of the EU bail out mechanism saving us billions. It is only as a result of the Coalition that Conservative ministers are currently unable to bring forward a Government Bill to secure a referendum at present, as it needs to get through the PBL committee (which needs agreement from both Coalition parties). The Conservative Party has therefore been looking at all options to underline the fact that our commitment to the referendum is absolute. Earlier this year, the Conservative Party published, in advance of the ballot for Private Members Bills, the text of a draft Bill which was available for a backbench Member of Parliament to take forward. THIS TELL ME THAT THE LIBERALS ARE BLOCKING A REFERENDUM NOW. IT ALSO REFUTES THE SPANISH TAT, AND CONFIRMS WE WILL GET A REFERENDUM. As you may be aware, James Wharton MP came first in the ballot for Private Members’ Bills, and announced that he would be bringing forward a Bill to put into law the Prime Ministers commitment. The Bill is, in fact, being debated right now in the House of Commons, and the Conservative Party stands fully behind it. The fact that there has been such strong opposition to this Bill from the Labour Party and the Liberal Democrats underlines the fact that electing a Conservative majority Government in 2015 is the only way to ensure that we have a Government and a Prime Minister who will stand up to Brussels for Britain, and who will let the British people decide whether we stay in or leave the EU. Thank you, once again, for taking the time and trouble to get in touch. I can absolutely reassure you that we are committed to giving the British people the choice they deserve on this subject and I would encourage you to sign up to letbritaindecide to give British people the choice they deserve. Yours sincerely, Jamie I think the fact they are campaigning for a referendum and asking people to get behind it, says it all: letbritaindecide/ Goodnight and thank you for your likes, comments and company. ~ [E]
