On the 2nd October 2 more Ghost nets were recovered and removed - TopicsExpress

On the 2nd October 2 more Ghost nets were recovered and removed from the Ocean in the Maldives. These are both Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) which are heavily used in the Western Indian Ocean. Unfortunately despite the knowledge that fishing nets used in FADs are dangerous to turtles they continue to be constructed with fishing nets to attract fish. These FADs had many barnacles attached, indicating they have been in the ocean for an extended period of time. Thanks to Amanda Batlle Morera for removing the net and recording information on the design. This information will be presented at the IOTC meeting in Japan and we hope this will help urge regulations to quickly adopt the recommendation to remove fishing nets from FAD designs. Thanks Amanda :)
