2014 Christmas Cakes in Tokyo series - final episode! Id like to end the series by going back to the classic Japanese-version strawberry shortcake, made with soft sponge cake, whipped cream and fresh strawberries. The first one is from a pastry shop called Gin no Budo (The Silver Grape), and is called Strawberries on a Snowy Christmas Eve. Its a really classic strawberry shortcake with a cascade of strawberries going up the side. christmas.budonoki.jp/cake1.html The second strawberry shortcake is from the pastry shop that started the tradition of the strawberry shortcake as *the* Christmas cake in Japan. Fujiya, which is now known as a general confectionery manufacturer and is best known for its Milky candy and Peko-chan character, got its start as a pastry shop in Motomachi, Yokohama in 1910. They introduced the strawberry shortcake in 1922, when they opened their first restaurant in Isezakicho, Yokohama. Since my mother and stepfather decided to settle in Yokohama when they retired, the city has become a kind of second home for me, so the fact that the Christmas cake tradition got its start here makes me feel rather happy. ^_^ fujiya-peko.co.jp/cake/christmas/short.html Fujiya for my mothers generation was a high class pastry shop that was only affordable once or twice a year. Gin no Budo had a similar high-class reputation in the 1980s-90s when I was younger ^_^ Nowadays you can get amazing cakes from any number of famous patisseries in the Tokyo area, both Japanese and ones from France and elsewhere, but seeing the classic cakes from these two classic places feels appropriately nostalgic.
