On the Run - By: Dink Taylor: We have had a pretty mild summer but it wasn’t without our share of hot runs. Fast approaching is what I like to refer to as “The most wonderful time of the year.” We got our first taste of Fall this past weekend and how refreshing it was. I have been keeping my ears open and listening to what everyone has been saying. Some of the comments go something like this; “I just can’t run as fast as I did last year, I don’t know if I will run the marathon this year.” “I just can’t breathe.” “My legs feel dead.” The list goes on and on. What I can’t seem to convince several of the runners is this, the heat has a major effect on our training. The heat drags us down. It dehydrates us. It hurts our ability to take in oxygen. It makes our apparel and shoes soaked with sweat. I know some of you enjoy the feeling, like you had a good workout, but I am here to tell you that it makes training more difficult. I am also here to remind you that cooler temps are on the way. Your legs will become more alive and fresh. Your training and racing times will improve considerably. You confidence to run a marathon this Fall will come back. The crisp air will be easier to breathe. You will finish long runs with dry shoes and much lighter sweating, how wonderful is that? It was clear to me this past Saturday morning that the cooler temps were greatly appreciated. I went out with the Fleet Feet Marathon Training group for a long training run. I saw more runners out on the Rocket City Marathon course Saturday morning training than I have seen in a long time. Maybe as many as 75 to 100 and we weren’t at a race! The Fall season is fast approaching. We still have a few warm days left but take note. The days are getting shorter and the temperatures are falling. Soon the leaves will be turning colors too. Enjoy each and every run; take the head phones off, look around, pay attention to your surroundings and be thankful to be out running.
