On the back of a good win by the mens team yesterday to bring the MJ Rioli cup home, the youth girls also looked to make their mark this weekend. Proud to say this weekend as a team we made history, it being the first occasion that the full side has been Tiwi players. Furthermore that all the girls traveled in, stayed together and played as a team. With a wonderful effort by our support crew our team represented their families and the community well off the field and on it. This morning we recorded our highest ever score, with a 27.23.185 to nil victory over Tahs. This is significant for many reasons, but a few points to make; - three players made their debut this week and all three finished with a goal, Aggie Kantilla and Bonita Tipiloura (1ea) and Kyanne Warlapinni finished with two to celebrate her birthday :) - our whole team that took the field today, prior to this season had never played in the NTFL before and many had not played competition footy - the majority of our players are 14 and under (in an under 16 comp) - fifteen of our nineteen players were amongst the goals today after (rotations were on double time today!) - we kicked more goals in the second half, showing we got better as the game went on. It was for the most part an even performance across the team, and were impressed with the effort to uphold our three focus areas for the game; 1) awareness, 2) inspiration 3) Tiwi magic A few special mentions... In a six goal opening term, Jerrica Heenan got on the end of some great ruck work by Christina Puruntatameri and solid delivery by our new look midfield and gave us the ascendancy with a four goal haul. Brandy Kerinaiua played a solid four quarters, with a goal in three of them and using her big kick to give the team an advantage on many occasions. She led well today as captain after being a big help the night before in preparing for the teams arrival - great team spirit. Rina Moreen lit up the field at times with some of that Tiwi magic we were after, kicking the goal of the game with a left foot snap that was AFL like! Pleased to say Kenisha Winunguj found her feet today and kicked her first goal of the season and showed us she is keen to improve. Kyanne and Bonita both listened well in their first game and made the most of their opportunities, showing they are keen to be part of future games. And as impressive as our scoreline is, it is a result of the relentless pressure we apply as a team with our backline players never beaten, lead by Roberta, Ursula, Joelle and Kimberley. With Marion and combining in the forwards we capitalised well. Jasmine and Martha crumbled superbly and set up many of their team mates to add to our tally of goal- kickers: - Jerrica Heenan (5) - Brandy Kerinaiua & Jovita Tipiloura (3) - Marion Fernando, Sheraylla Puruntatameri, Christina Puruntatameri, Kyanne Warlapinni, Roberta Tipungwuti (2) - Joelle Kantilla, Martha De Santis, Rina Moreen, Bonita Tipiloura, Kenisha Winunguj, Aggie Kantilla (1ea) Best Players 1. Brandy Kerinaiua 2. Christina Puruntatameri 3. Jerrica Heenan 4. Kyanne Warlapinni 5. Kenisha Wununguj 6. Bonita Tipiloura Thanks to Sealink, St Johns College, Karen Sheldon Catering and most importantly our helpers; Cam, Browny, Christian, Nadia, Kerry, Tess, Colleen and Sally Anne who all made this weekend run smoothly. To family that came and cheered your support means a lot. And to Bek, Bianca, Tiwi College crew and family on the islands that help get the girls in we appreciate it. A thank you also to Bradley Palipuaminni who took the initiative to train the players at Wurrumiyanga this week. We look forward next week now, for our last game of the year, when we take on 3rd place Wanderers! ~One Team, One Dream~
