On the brink of a federal court decision over disputes regarding the funding of USDA inspections of horses to be slaughtered in the US, the USDA is criticized b...y the GAO for attempting to change the rate and speed of inspections at meat and poultry slaughterhouses, which they believe could jeopardize the safety of the poultry and meat. The GAO believes that the USDA didn’t evaluate the pilot project that sparked this proposal enough. This raises yet another red flag on the issue of horse slaughter as there are many toxic substances administered to U.S. horses that can cause lethal affects when ingested by humans. Congress sits idle despite their ability to pass pending legislation that would prevent human health threats posed by the consumption of equines raised in the United States, but you can help change this.
