On the cross God in Christ endured and absorbed sinful human violence Our sins In order to break the vicious cycle of sinful violence. On the cross Jesus said Father forgive them! The word forgive means release. Jesus had just endured violent beatings through mans sinfulness In order to break this vicious cycle of violence Jesus responded with words of forgiveness and release which are intended to break the power of sinful violence in humanity. This is what the Bible means when it says that Jesus died for our sins. Do you think I am making this up? 1 peter 2 19 For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly. 20 For what credit is it if, when you sin and are BEATEN for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. 21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. 22 He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. 23 When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. Cain you see this? Peter is telling us why Jesus died for sins. He is dealing with the issue of sinful violence and enduring it. He says the JESUS endured sinful violence on the cross to set us an example. By experiencing our violence JESUS did not respond in the same way but instead Responded with forgiveness and release and healing. This is what the Bible means that Jesus died for sins. Jesus died for our sins by experiencing our sinful violence and by doing so broke the power of sinful violence And by the stripes we gave him we have been healed. There is nothing here to say that God punished Jesus for our sins. It was an act of healing and liberation. On the cross God in Christ dealt with the problem of sinful violence By absorbing it into his own body on the Cross Thereby breaking the control of the power of sin And setting us free.
